Shell crafts reach US$ 2.5 million of foreign exchanges
Several shell crafts combined with silver jewelery, wood or syntactic skin acquire foreign exchange reach US$ 2.5 million in 2006 that value increase than period 2005 only US$ 2.1 million. “The value of products export increase, because craftsmen can create a unique products depend on the costumers’ demand,” the Trade and Industrial Office Bali reported that recently.
Balinese craftsmen are very creative to produce many kinds of shells crafts that material were got in several beaches, which will combine with wood, silver and gold.“The jewelery made of small shell that combined with black wood is very interested by African costumers,” an entrepreneur, Nyoman Sutarmi. She added, as well as jewelery, Balinese craftsmen also make other motif of shell crafts such as ashtrays with several motifs, turtles and others. Up to these days, shell crafts were exported to Italian and French markets. Usually, the product is used as decoration or accessories. “As well as exported to foreign markets, the products are also offered in local markets.
Many foreign tourists who visit Bali also buy several handicraft products as a souvenir, particularly handicrafts made of shell beside spend the holiday in Bali. Many domestic tourists, particularly ladies from Jakarta are also interested the products. Normally, they buy the product with the price Rp 900,000 until Rp 5 million which depends on the sizes, motifs and designs.
